Honoring Our Heroes

On Friday, November 8th, each CCS-America campus held its annual Veterans Day Program. Family members, local veterans, and members of the community were invited to join in a celebration of those who protect us and our freedom.

Students, under the guidance of their dedicated music teachers, performed patriotic songs to honor and thank our heroes. Thank you to these music teachers and the performers for all of their hard work on these programs.

Our students had a great time honoring our heroes and showing them how much we appreciate them. Veterans, thank you for all you have done for us and for our country!

Extracurricular Spotlight: RBA Cheerleading

This weekend, our RBA cheerleading team is gearing up for an exciting challenge as they head to Concord for their first competition of the year.

Founded in 2004 by Jeane LaFave, RBA Reign Athletics Competitive Cheerleading has grown into one of the most respected programs in the area, bringing home over 30 national titles at various levels.

For over two decades, RBA Cheerleading has conveyed the message that cheer is not just about competing — it’s about building the values of discipline, teamwork, and integrity. These core values have shaped not only the athletes themselves, but have also created a true sense of family and community within the program. This impact goes far beyond the gym, as many former athletes return as coaches or bring their own children to join the program.

While RBA has earned numerous awards and accolades over the years, its greatest success is undoubtedly the lasting relationships it has helped to build and nurture.

Let’s all take a moment to wish these dedicated athletes the best of luck as they showcase their skills and hard work this weekend. We are so proud of them and can’t wait to cheer them on!

For more information about RBA Athletics and to become part of this amazing cheer family, contact Coach Lafave at rbaathletics@gmail.com.

Why Do We Say the School Pledge?

Every morning, CCS-America students and staff gather together and start the day by reciting both the Pledge of Allegiance and the CCS-A School Pledge. But why is this tradition so important?

We recite the Pledge of Allegiance to express our pride in being Americans and to help students understand and appreciate the value of the freedoms and rights we hold dear.

The School Pledge, on the other hand, is said to set high expectations for ourselves, both in the classroom and in life. The Pledge emphasizes the importance of health, truth, and virtue. At the beginning of the school year, students explore the significance of the Pledge in their Character Education classes. Then, each month, students focus on a specific character trait, connecting it to the values expressed in the Pledge to deepen their understanding.

We encourage all parents and guardians to discuss the Pledge and its tenets with their children. Together, you can apply these values to everyday life, helping your children grow into citizens of strong character with strong futures.

Student Work Spotlight: Fairy Tales

Our seventh grade English students recently embarked on an enchanting journey through the history and elements of fairy tales. They learned about the cultural significance and timeless appeal behind these stories. Students explored the common characteristics of fairy tales, such as magical elements, historical settings, and themes that teach lessons.

Students read classic tales from, “The Blue Fairy Book,” a collection that features favorites like “Beauty and the Beast,” “The Yellow Dwarf,” and “The Princess on the Glass Hill.” They analyzed the common themes and structures, learning how these narratives have evolved over time across different cultures.

Finally, it was time for the real magic to happen- students used their creativity and what they had learned to write their own original fairy tales! Each story reflected the student’s unique voice and perspective, while using the traditional structure and characteristics of fairy tales. While all of the stories were impressive, the tales written by Scout Chambers and Katie McMahon stood out for their artistry and depth. This experience not only fostered a love for literature, but also encouraged creativity and critical thinking.

Halloween Festivities: Trunk or Treat

All four campuses got into the Halloween Spirit with our Annual Trunk or Treat celebration.

Parents, staff, and volunteers worked hard to transform their cars into delightful and spooky displays. From friendly ghosts to thrilling monsters and even Super Mario, each trunk had its own unique theme.

Elementary students dressed up in creative costumes and paraded across campus, collecting candy, toys, and other fun goodies from each trunk. Some campuses even hosted a staff costume contest!

With amazing costumes, smiling faces, and full candy buckets, this event was an amazing success! Thank you to everyone who participated and helped make our Halloween festivities so memorable!

School News – 5/29/2024

Dear Classical Charter Schools of America parents, families, and friends,

With the end of the 2023-2024 school year approaching, I am filled with immense pride and gratitude for all that our students and staff have accomplished. This year has been marked by growth, achievements, and unforgettable moments.

The year began with our schools being recognized by the Center for Research on Education Outcomes (CREDO) at Stanford University as educational top performers in the country, specifically identified as “gap busters.” This means that our schools are among the best in the nation at ensuring students from all backgrounds succeed in school. In addition, We were thrilled to achieve a national Top 20 ranking on the CLT8, a Classical Learning Test administered to hundreds of schools nationwide. CCS-Leland, in fact, was the only public, open to all, and tuition-free school in the top 20. Both recognitions are a testament to the hard work and dedication of our entire school community.

This year also brought many exciting firsts within the CCS-America system, including the launch of

middle school sports with the inaugural basketball season and our first Spelling Bee. We celebrated the opening of two new auditoriums that provide spaces for these events and more. Students also continued to compete in FASTAR and the History Bowl; showcased their talents in state and national competitions in archery, cheerleading, and Science Olympiad, and proudly represented the CCS-America community in Beta Club, the national student society that promotes “the ideals of academic achievement, character, leadership, and service.”

Throughout the year, we maintained a focus on school safety while upholding our traditional, classical values and curriculum. Students honed skills like cursive writing and Latin while excelling in subjects such as history, math, science, and reading.

As we reflect on these successes of this past year, I am excited about the future and continued

achievements that lie ahead in our 25th year of academic excellence. I extend my heartfelt thanks to our dedicated staff, supportive parents, and hardworking students for making this year truly memorable. We wish you all a restful and enjoyable summer break.

Warm regards,

Baker A. Mitchell, Founder

EOG Tips and Tricks

As we approach the end-of-grade (EOG) testing period, we want to ensure our students are prepared and supported for success. This Friday, 5th and 8th graders will be taking the Science EOG, followed by the Reading EOG on Tuesday, May 21, and the Mathematics EOG on Wednesday, May 22 for grades 3-8. To help our students perform their best, here are some tips for parents and guardians to assist them during this crucial time:

  1. Create a quiet and dedicated space for your student to complete and review homework.
  2. Encourage your student to explain what he or she has learned in school to reinforce their understanding.
  3. Ensure your student gets enough rest with an early bedtime.
  4. Help your student review any classwork or study review materials.
  5. Be sure to serve healthy, well-balanced meals, especially for breakfast, to fuel your student’s day.
  6. Help your student manage stress and anxiety by discussing expectations, concerns, and aspirations.
  7. Start the testing day calmly to set a positive tone.
  8. Remind your student to take the test seriously and to listen carefully to all instructions.
  9. To combat test anxiety, encourage your student to take deep breaths to relax and utilize breaks during the test.
  10. When the tests are complete, celebrate the hard work and achievements of your student!

Students of the Month

CCS-America students are recognized monthly for displaying a specific character trait from our School Pledge that they not only say but also practice in their daily lives.

April’s character trait was Respect. Students who show respect treat others with honor and dignity. Respect is seen in the School Pledge as “I pledge to be obedient and loyal to those in authority.” CCS-America students apply these words to their everyday lives by treating adults with courtesy, using good manners, and treating their peers the way they want to be treated.

Congratulations to all of these students who demonstrated exemplary respect. Check them out on the links below!

Did You Know? A Cautionary Tale.

  • Starting in kindergarten, consistent absence, whether excused or unexcused, can lead to children falling behind in school.
  • Missing 10 percent of school days, that’s just two days a month, increases the chance that your student will not achieve the same level of reading and math proficiency as their peers.
  • Even missing a day or two every few weeks can hinder a student’s academic progress.

When a student accumulates 10 or more unexcused absences, the parent/guardian may be in violation of North Carolina’s Compulsory Attendance Law and could face prosecution if the absences cannot be justified under the established attendance policies. Recently, a parent at CCS-America received a jail sentence due to their child’s attendance record. Monitoring attendance closely, with letters sent home after 3, 6, and 10 unexcused days, aims to prevent families from being referred to the district attorney’s office and facing criminal court appearances. This offense is classified as a Class I Misdemeanor and could potentially result in up to 120 days of incarceration of the parent/guardian.

We miss your students when they are not in school, and we value their contributions to our community. We would like your help in ensuring that your student attends school regularly and achieves success academically. If your student is going to be absent, please contact the child’s teacher and send in a written note from you, the doctor, etc., excusing the absence.
